Visual argumentation

Argumentation theory is based on a relation between logic, rhetoric, and dialectics. All three are essential in graphic design to enable commissioners to communicate with their contacts.

Literature

The literature is very broad and I’m mainly interested to find out if ‘argumentation’ could be used as a theoretical basis for visual communication.

I focus on the following titles:

• Perelman, C. and Olbrechts-Tyteca, L. 1969. The New Rhetoric. A treatise on Argumentation.

• Tindale, Christopher W. 2004. Rhetorical Argumentation. Sage publications.

• Toulmin, S. 1958. The uses of argument. Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press
